What Is the Fan Regulator Approach? The Consistency Method for Indian Women

By Coach Shobana · 5 min read

Let me tell you about Ramya — one of my long-time clients, and now my assistant coach.

When she first joined me, she had this all-or-nothing mindset. If she was stressed, or her kids' exams were coming up, she'd stop everything — workouts, food planning, all of it. One difficult week and the whole plan was gone, not paused, gone. She'd start over the following Monday, or the 1st of the month, and the cycle would repeat.

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. It's the single most common pattern I see in Indian women trying to get consistent — not a lack of knowledge, not a lack of effort, just this switch in the head that only knows on or off.

The On/Off Switch Is the Real Problem

Most of us think about our health like a light switch. ON some days — full workout, perfect meals, all the willpower in the world. OFF on the hard days — a wedding, a stressful week at work, a sick child — and once it's off, it feels pointless to do anything at all. Why bother with a 10-minute walk if you can't do the full hour ?? Why eat one balanced meal if you've already "ruined" the day ??

That thinking is exactly why so many of us restart every Monday, or the 1st of every month, for years. The switch isn't broken. The switch was always the wrong model.

Building Guard Rails Instead

With Ramya, we worked on building what I call guard rails for the tough weeks — things that help you stay on track even when life gets genuinely messy. Instead of doing nothing, she'd do something, even if it was just a 10-minute movement or one simple, balanced meal. Instead of waiting for the "perfect" week to come back around, she had a smaller version of the plan ready for the weeks that weren't perfect.

That's the whole shift. Not more discipline. A different structure to fall back on when discipline runs out — because it will, for all of us, on some weeks.

Some Days on 5, Some Days on 2, But Never Zero

She started seeing herself not as an on/off switch, but like a fan regulator. Some days on 5, some days on 2, but never zero. And that shift completely changed her consistency and her confidence.

That's the Fan Regulator Approach, in one image. A fan doesn't only run at full speed or not at all — you turn the dial up or down depending on what the room needs. Your health can work the same way. On a normal week, you might be at a 5 — full workouts, planned meals, all the structure. During a stressful week, a wedding, exam season, travel, you turn the dial down to a 2. You still move. You still eat something balanced. You just don't switch off entirely.

There is no "off track" in this approach. There's only adjusting the dial.

Why This Matters More Than Any Meal Plan

I can give any client a nutrition plan and a workout schedule. That was never the hard part, and it never fixes the real problem on its own. The real work is what happens the week her kid falls sick, or a wedding lands in the middle of her program, or work gets stressful enough that cooking feels impossible. If the plan can't survive that week, it was never going to survive a lifetime.

This is why Ramya doesn't just manage her own health today — she teaches it to others. She's our aerobics instructor and assistant coach inside Transform Tribe now, and when she coaches a client through a rough week, she's not guessing. She's been the woman standing at zero, deciding whether to quit entirely or turn the dial down instead.

Turn the Dial, Don't Switch Off

If you recognise yourself in this — the all-or-nothing restarts, the Monday resets, the feeling that one bad day undoes everything — the fan regulator isn't a trick. It's a different relationship with consistency altogether. You're allowed to be at a 2 some weeks. You're allowed to have a smaller version of the plan for your hardest weeks. What you're not allowed to do, in this program, is switch off completely and call it failure.

That single shift is often the difference between a woman who restarts for years and a woman who finally becomes consistent for the first time in her life.
